Have You Paid Your Rent?

As a young man trying to find my way, a mentor shared life-changing wisdom with me.

He helped me become a better person.

A better leader.

He helped me in ways that I could never repay.

Except to share his wisdom with others.

You, perhaps.

After all, wisdom isn’t really owned.

It’s borrowed.

And becomes more valuable the more it is shared.

We used to talk a lot about “arriving” at a destination.

Success.

Happiness.

Love.

We talked about it all.

As a young leader, I commented one time that I felt I had paid my dues and deserved more money and a better position.

His reply would change me forever.

He said,

“Son, you don’t get the luxury to have arrived. Success, personal growth, and difference-making are continuous journeys. Your dues are never paid. The rent on this life must be paid daily.”

I have carried this truth with me every day of my life since.

When I feel entitled.

When I feel like I’ve reached some measure of success.

When I believe I’ve made it.

I think of his words and ask myself…

“Have you paid your rent today?”

It’s a good question.

It keeps me humble and focused.

Perhaps we should all consider each day whether or not we have paid the rent that is due for the space we occupy.

We get one shot at this life.

Keep growing.

Keep dreaming.

Keep believing.

And keep your rent current.
