Winning in business and life requires us to grow to the next level.
What got us to our current place won’t get us to the next place.
Our capacity to achieve more relies heavily on our ability to become more.
As you become more successful. As you evolve, it is likely that the people around you will take notice.
Some will applaud you.
Some will laud you.
Some will be proud of you.
Some will be jealous of you.
The truth is, that when we grow, relationships change.
In fact, they must.
If it’s true that what got us to our current place won’t get us to the next place, then the same must be true of our relationships.
As we have grown ourselves and our business, our connections to others have changed.
Some relationships have gotten deeper.
Some, shallower.
Some have disappeared.
And still others have emerged.
Some friends have moved on from us because “we’ve changed.”
This, particularly, used to really bother me.
Until a mentor set me straight.
She said, “Of course, you’ve changed. You’re growing, working to get better. Change is the whole point. You shouldn’t feel bad because you’ve changed, and some people choose not to grow with you. Everyone has a choice.”
A truth I try to keep top of mind.
She was right.
Winning in life is about growth.
Period.
People who choose not to grow aren’t bad people.
Neither are those who choose to become more.
They just made different choices.
To get to the next level, you need new relationships.
And some, you need to let go of.
They just weren’t meant to take the entire journey with you.
Love them. Wish them well.
And move on.
Embrace those who are taking the trip with you today.
Knowing that some will stay.
Some will go.
New ones will come.
This is how we grow.
Find gratitude for every single person who has helped write a line or two in your story.
Every one of them added something to who you are right now.
Until next time, keep growing.

I was blessed to have a great corporate career. I came from the franchise world, and the last 20 years of my career I was in disaster restoration. A good fit for someone who had created many disasters and was in need of restoration. And redemption. I worked my way to the c-suite in a […]
After a short hiatus, I’m back this week with another installment in our series on winning. Back in the day, I was a little league baseballer. I played shortstop. And I was good too. They called me “hoover” because I could vacuum up any ball hit my way. I was also good with the bat. […]
No matter how successful or accomplished you are, there is always another level. In business. In sports. In life. Your big, crazy, monster goal is someone else’s minimum standard to play the game. You make a million this year. Others might say that was a good month. Make a billion. Then there’s Elon, Bezos, and […]
