Stop Chasing Greatness (It’s Looking for You)

I know.

It doesn’t make sense.

After all, we’ve been told to crush our goals, do great things, and live our dreams.

But what if we’ve had it backwards and greatness was actually looking for us?

Consider the people we aspire to be like.

The ones who make us stop in our tracks and admire their work.

The ones who seem to have a little something extra.

If you listen, the greats, the GOATs, and the gifted ones aren’t talking about chasing greatness.

They talk about consistently chasing their potential.

To be THEIR best.

Consistently putting in good work.

Consistently trying to better their best.

Even when it hurts.

Up early while the rest of the world sleeps.

Mastering self.

And the fundamentals of their craft.

Working on their gift instead of taking it for granted.

You see, I think they know two things that most people don’t even think about.

  1. Consistency is a superpower.
  2. Greatness is none of your business.

Consistently good crushes occasionally great.

Greatness is subjective.

Elusive.

Like catching smoke.

Greatness is defined by others.

The industry.

The fans.

Your peers.

Your clients.

Your friends.

Your family.

History will determine your greatness.

So how does greatness find you?

I think comedian Steve Martin said it best.

“Be so good they can’t ignore you.”

I believe greatness works the same way. Be so good that greatness can’t ignore you.

Greatness is looking for those who are good enough to be great.

The Super Good.

Super Good is the consistent pursuit of your potential in three areas.

  1. Be Good: This is about preparation. Success begins with self-mastery. Preparing yourself to compete. Digging out your potential. Focusing on mind, body, and spirit to improve skills and elevate your gifts.
  2. Do Good: This is about execution. Super Good is about moving beyond intentions and preparation to act. Doing good on the field, at work, and in life.
  3. Find Good: This is about recognition. Sustainable impact extends beyond personal performance and looks for ways to elevate the performance of others. Super Good sees the good in others and the world around them.

Every performance should be measured against two things.

Your potential and your last performance.

In business, our mantra was, “We are only as good as our last job.”

Your brand lives in the mind of the consumer and what they are silently asking is, “How good are you?”

When you are consistently good, greatness will find you.

Are you good enough to make us stop in our tracks and admire your work?

Are you good enough to make us stand and cheer for you?

Are you good enough to make hard things seem easy?

Greatness is looking for you.

Are you good enough to be GREAT?

People often approach me after an event. They say, “I want to do what you do!” My response is always the same. “Are you willing to do what I’ve done.” The truth is a lot of people want to BE something. An author. A speaker. A dancer. An artist. Wanting to BE something is great. […]

10 Lessons on Winning: #4 You Will Be Criticized

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” ~ Mother Teresa I love this quote. Not only because of the powerful truth it contains. But because of who wrote it. Mother Teresa. A saint. When the Catholic Church began the process to canonize her, she had many supporters. They recounted miracles and […]
