“When you are genuinely being your true self, you need no words of explanation. You just are.”

Laurie E. Smith

As we continue to explore the “Bea Attitudes” I want to focus this week on one of Bea’s most magical attributes.

Authenticity.

Now, if you’re like me, you might cringe a little when you hear that word.

It’s an overused word that has made its way into the corporate buzzword hall of fame.

And while the word may be overused, I believe the actual practice of authenticity is the most underused in business and in life.

I believe that the essence of being authentic is serving others with a generous and genuine spirit.

It’s leading with intention and a willingness to make life better for those around us.

It’s about being your true self instead of hiding behind the masks of who you think you need to be to impress others.

In fact, if you really want to impress others, give them the highest and best version of yourself.

The real you.

That place where your gifts can collide with the wants and needs of others.

That’s when the real magic happens.

When I was just getting started in my career there was a phrase “fake it until you make it.”

I understand the intent.

Pretend like you’ve got it figured out while you’re figuring it out.

Got it.

The problem is far too many people get stuck in the “faking” it part and forget about the figuring it out part.

Part of figuring it out is leaning into the talents, gifts, and abilities that are uniquely you.

Pouring every ounce of your best self into the most important roles of your life.

Bea gave us the very best of herself. She used her gifts to make our life better. That’s what heroes do after all.

She was genuinely interested in creating the best outcome for our family and she showed up in a way that set her apart from everyone else.

She let her true self shine in a moment that has brightened our lives in immeasurable ways.

People ask me all the time, “What is the secret to your success as a professional speaker?”

The answer is always the same.

“The more I close the gap between who I am on stage and off, the more influence I can have with others.”

People can smell a phony.

The world is craving the true you.

No explanation.

Just you.

Be who you are.

Be where you are.

Be like Bea and make it the best week ever!

10 Lessons on Winning: #8 You Are the Competition — You Are Only as Good as Your Last Performance

I was blessed to have a great corporate career. I came from the franchise world, and the last 20 years of my career I was in disaster restoration. A good fit for someone who had created many disasters and was in need of restoration. And redemption. I worked my way to the c-suite in a […]

10 Lessons on Winning: #7 How You Win Matters

After a short hiatus, I’m back this week with another installment in our series on winning. Back in the day, I was a little league baseballer. I played shortstop. And I was good too. They called me “hoover” because I could vacuum up any ball hit my way. I was also good with the bat. […]

10 Lessons on Winning: #6 There’s Always Another Level

No matter how successful or accomplished you are, there is always another level. In business. In sports. In life. Your big, crazy, monster goal is someone else’s minimum standard to play the game. You make a million this year. Others might say that was a good month. Make a billion. Then there’s Elon, Bezos, and […]
